Pay-per-mile tax is coming. Customers will ask you first.
From April 2028 electric and plug-in hybrid cars pay eVED by the mile. Here is what that means on the desk, and a calculator you can use with the customer.
What is actually changing
From 1 April 2028, battery electric and hydrogen cars pay 3p a mile in Electric Vehicle Excise Duty. Plug-in hybrids pay 1.5p. It sits on top of ordinary road tax, not instead of it.
Mileage is self-reported through the DVLA, with the MOT used to check the reading. There is no tracker in the car. Customers will still walk into an independent garage and ask what it means for them.
Have a number ready
A fully electric car doing 8,000 miles is about £240 a year in eVED. A plug-in hybrid on the same miles is about £120. High-mileage vans and courtesy cars will sit higher. That is the conversation, not a political argument.
